When José Mourinho joined Inter Milan in the summer of 2008, he did so having previously left Chelsea after becoming the most successful manager in the west London club's history. Suceeding Roberto Mancini, who had led Inter to a third consecutive Serie A title the previous season, Mourinho's task was clear – to deliver the Champions League. His first season in Milan yielded success in Serie A and the Supercoppa Italiana, but there was disappointment in the Champions League – elimination by Manchester United.
It was a failure that proved crucial to their eventual success, in helping Mourinho to identify what his team needed to take that next step. After a summer when Wesley Sneijder, Diego Milito and Samuel Eto'o were among those to arrive at the San Siro, Mourinho oversaw a season of unprecedented success, delivering the Serie A title, the Coppa Italia, and a long-awaited Champions League trophy.
